The Space Geodesy Research Group (GRGS)
The space geodesy research group is a scientific group composed of 10 French research teams belonging to national institutions with activities in space geodesy. GRGS research focuses on activities in space geodesy, including orbital mechanics, the Earth's gravitational field, the Earth's rotation and reference systems, geodetic measurements, satellite altimetry, planetary geodesy and theoretical physics.
Presentation
The space geodesy research group is a scientific group comprising:
- Bureau des Longitudes
- CNES (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales)
- IGN (Institut Géographique National)
- Paris Observatory (Observatoire de Paris)
- INSU (Institut National des Sciences de l'Univers)
- Côte d'Azur Observatory (Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur)
- SHOM
- Midi-Pyrénées Observatory (Observatoire Midi-Pyrénées)
- University of French Polynesia (Université de Polynésie Française)
- CNAM (Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers)
Scientific Research
Currently, several projects related to the observation of sea levels fall within the scope of GRGS activities:
- TIGA (Tide Gauges IGS Pilot Project). LAREG, in collaboration with the University of La Rochelle, has established a GPS data analysis centre that has processed a global GPS network of 250 stations since 2003. The solutions from 150 of these stations are used to build a reference network of tide gauges used for monitoring changes in sea levels and coastal deformations. For further information, link
- BATHYELLI (ellipsoid-referenced bathymetry). This project, led by SHOM, aims to measure the vertical hydrographical references for the entire French coastline using a stable, accurate and accessible reference frame (GRS80 ellipsoid of RGF93). For further information: link and poster, 2008.
