Sea Level Station Monitoring Facility (UNESCO/IOC)

The objectives of the real-time data service developed by the IOC are

  • to provide information about the operational status of global and regional networks of real time sea level stations (for quick appraisal of the availability and performance of each station and the type of transmission used and the latency of the real-time data)
  • to provide a display service for quick inspection of the raw data stream from individual stations.

Origin of the portal

This site was initially developed for stations in Africa, with collaboration between IODE's ODINAFRICA project and the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ). The site was then extended to worldwide monitoring of real-time tide stations participating in IOC programmes:

  • GLOSS (Global Sea Level Observing System Core Network);
  • Tsunami alert systems developed under the aegis of the IOC: The tsunami alert system in the Indian Ocean (IOTWS), the tsunami alert system in the North-East Atlantic and Mediterranean (NEAMTWS), the tsunami alert system in the Caribbean (CARTWS), and the tsunami alert system in the Pacific (PTWS).
