REFMAR does not restrict itself to providing digital sea level observations but also offers a special page on historical sea level data. This inventory consists in particular of: :

  • the start and end year of the measurements;
  • the total duration (in years);
  • the number of effective years;
  • the number of sets of measurements;
  • the type of medium (register, marigram etc);
  • comments;
  • the location of the archives.

Given the importance of these historical data* (after reconstruction and analysis work), and under the auspices of GLOSS (letter available here), action supported by the IHO (letter available here) has been undertaken since December 2011 in order to establish, enrich and inventory the historical sea level data that is in paper format.
It should be noted that this action, which is a re-launch of another earlier action in 2001, falls fully within the scope of REFMAR's missions: "all bodies, establishments or departments collecting, organizing the collection of or having within its possession sea level observations ... are encouraged to put any historical data that they have in their possession into the ad-hoc format and communicate them to the national reference body so that they can be added to the existing data bases"..

Do not hesitate to contact us if you have such historical records in your possession and thus contribute to the enrichment and sharing of these unique measurements with the worldwide community. We will provide the link between you and the GLOSS.

* Long series of historical sea level data are essential, particularly for statistical studies of extreme high tide sea levels and the study of long term changes in sea levels (SONEL)...
